The deck hatch cover hinge lug body is the lug that carries the hinge pin between a hatch cover and its coaming, taking the full lifting and slamming load every time the cover is opened or shipped a sea. Lugs welded to the deck or cover plate distort during welding, pulling the hinge line out of alignment so the cover binds, the pin wears oval and the gasket no longer compresses evenly. At the same time, the crevice under the base plate pits unnoticed in chlorinated washdown water. A one-piece duplex 2205 investment casting with an integral base pad removes the four fillet welds, and finish machining of the pin bore and base seat to CT5 after solution annealing puts every lug on the cover on one true hinge axis.

Key features
- Duplex 2205 at PREN 35 minimum resists the crevice attack under the lug base that pits 316L in warm, chlorinated washdown water.
- One-piece cast lug with integral base pad removes the four fillet welds that distort the hinge line and leave a crevice at the deck interface.
- Pin bored to CT5, holding H7 size and axis position within +/-0.05 mm of the base seat, so every lug on a cover shares one true hinge axis.
- Solution annealed at 1020-1100 C and water quenched, then pickled and passivated, with the furnace chart released for the heat lot.
- Yield strength near 450 MPa lets the lug cheek be thinned by roughly 25 percent against a 316L design at equal load.
- Cast drainage relief at the base pad stops water standing under the lug, removing the poultice that drives under-deposit corrosion.
- 100 percent bore gauge check on the pin bore plus a first article CMM report to the customer drawing with every ballooned feature.
Applications
- Moreover, Weatherdeck hatch cover hinge lugs on harbour tugs and workboats.
- Flush deck hatches and escape hatch lugs on passenger ferries and ro-pax vessels.
- Generally, Cargo hold and tank cleaning hatch lugs on dredgers, hoppers and barges.
- Access, lazarette and machinery space hatch hardware on superyachts.
- Deck hatch and equipment room closures on offshore service vessels.
- Equipment bay and weapon bay hatches on patrol craft and fast response boats.
Quality & compliance
Moreover, Ningbo Ruican casts and machines to IATF 16949 process control and works to ISO 9001 documentation practice. Every shipment carries EN 10204 3.1 material certification tied to the heat lot, with solution-anneal and water quench furnace charts, chemical analysis and mechanical test results. Generally, PPAP and FAIR packages are available to the customer’s submission level. In general, the first article ships with a full dimensional report covering every ballooned feature on the drawing. Duplex 2205 lots receive ferrite count by point count or magnetic measurement, targeting 35-55 percent, and intermetallic phase verification to the buyer’s specified method, with PMI available on request. Non-destructive testing, material standard and inspection acceptance level are supplied to the standard the buyer names on the drawing and order.
FAQ
Can you work from an existing hinge lug sample?
Yes. Send the sample or a worn lug and we 3D scan the body, bore and base pad, rebuild a model and return a drawing for your approval before tooling. We confirm pin diameter, hinge line offset, cheek thickness and the fastener pattern on the coaming. Additionally, where the original was welded we propose an integral base pad, quoted separately. Also, you can compare the legacy shape with the revised one. Tooling takes five to six weeks.
Do you supply duplex 2205 with a ferrite count and no sigma phase?
Yes. Overall, duplex lugs are solution annealed at 1020-1100 C and water quenched, with the furnace chart released with the lot. Where the drawing requires it, ferrite is measured by point count or magnetic gauge and reported against the 35-55 percent target, and freedom from sigma and chi phase is verified to your specified test method. PMI is available on request, and results are reported with the first article and at the production sampling rate in the control plan.
What is the minimum order quantity?
We accept prototype and pilot quantities from a single tooling set, which suits refit and spares work, then scale to series production with multi-cavity tooling once annual volume justifies it. For hinge lugs the practical first release is around 50 to 100 pieces, because a single hatch set uses several lugs. Additionally, tooling is maintained and stored for repeat orders across the vessel programme, and we can hold agreed safety stock.
Do you machine the parts fully in-house?
Yes. Casting, solution annealing and quenching, CNC boring, CNC milling, drilling and passivation all run inside our Ningbo facility under one IATF 16949 control plan. Holding every operation in-house means the pin bore and base seat are machined in one datumed setup from the casting datums, so H7 bore size and the +/-0.05 mm axis position are verified against your drawing by one inspection team before release.
Can you match an existing class-approved part?
We reverse engineer an existing part, match the drawing geometry, material and heat treatment, and supply EN 10204 3.1 certification, dimensional reports and NDT evidence to the standard you specify. In addition, Ningbo Ruican holds no classification-society type approval and claims none; any class survey. It also holds plan approval or type approval remains the responsibility of the shipyard. It also holds the equipment maker and the society. Overall, we supply the evidence package your surveyor reviews.
