Dredge Cutter Head Hub Body

Category:

The dredge cutter head hub body is the central load-carrying component at the end of a cutter suction dredge (CSD) ladder, where the cutter arms, tooth holders and drive flange all meet. It operates submerged in abrasive slurry and takes continuous impact and torsional loading. Buyers typically come to us because OEM hub bodies crack at the arm roots or wear through at the flange faces far earlier than planned, and replacement lead times from the original supplier run long. We cast to your drawing, machine the critical interfaces in-house, and support renewal parts where only a worn sample survives.

Scope and options

Key features

  • One-piece cast hub body eliminates the weld seams that commonly initiate fatigue cracks in fabricated assemblies.
  • Arm root fillets radiused and dye penetrant inspected before any machining is released.
  • Moreover, Bore and flange machined in a single setup to hold concentricity under 0.05 mm TIR.
  • Generally, Material selected per slurry conditions: aluminium bronze for seawater abrasion, duplex for chloride pitting resistance.
  • Additionally, Balance pads provided for final static balancing after tooth arm installation.
  • Reverse engineering service available when drawings are lost, using 3D scanning of the worn sample.

Applications

  • Cutter suction dredges (CSD) used in port maintenance and land reclamation
  • Trailing suction hopper dredges with auxiliary cutter units
  • Bucket wheel dredgers and bucket ladder dredgers
  • Subsea rock cutting and trenching attachments
  • Sand and gravel mining cutter pumps
  • Dredge ladder rebuilds and life extension programmes

Quality & compliance

Every hub body is delivered with EN 10204 3.1 material certification traceable to the heat number, plus a chemical and mechanical test report from an accredited laboratory. Dye penetrant and ultrasonic testing are performed on request, and radiographic examination can be arranged for critical arm root sections. We issue a full dimensional report against your drawing, including CMM data for bore concentricity and flange flatness. Ningbo Ruican supplies components to shipyards and marine OEMs; classification-society type approval of the finished part remains the customer’s responsibility, and we support that process by supplying the documented material, NDT and dimensional evidence required by the surveyor.

FAQ

What information do you need to quote a dredge cutter head hub body?

Send a 2D drawing with tolerances and a 3D model if available, plus the material specification, annual quantity and the dredge model it fits. If no drawing exists, ship the worn hub to Ningbo and we will 3D scan it, produce a manufacturing drawing for your approval, and quote from that.

Which bronze grade do you recommend for abrasive seawater slurry?

Nickel aluminium bronze C95800 is our default for seawater with high sand content because it resists both erosion and cavitation. Moreover, manganese bronze C86300 is used where impact loading dominates. Duplex 2205 is selected when chloride pitting or a sour environment is the primary risk.

Can you hardface the wear areas of the hub body?

Yes. We apply hardfacing overlay to the leading arm faces and flange wear bands, then machine back to drawing dimension. The overlay chemistry is selected to match the substrate to avoid cracking during weld deposition and subsequent service.

How do you control distortion on a large hub casting?

We simulate solidification before tooling is cut, then use sacrificial machined datums and a stress relief cycle before finish machining. Critical bores are rough machined, stress relieved, and finish machined so that final geometry is stable after the part enters service.

Do you supply spare hub bodies for dredges no longer supported by the OEM?

Generally, yes, this is a large part of our work. We rebuild from the worn sample, upgrade the material where the original failed prematurely, and hold the tooling so repeat orders run without new tooling cost. Additionally, renewal parts ship in three to four weeks.

What is the minimum order quantity?

There is no fixed minimum. We routinely produce single renewal parts as well as production batches of twenty or more. Overall, tooling cost is amortised differently for one-off versus repeat work, and we will show both options on the quotation.
