Nut Harvester Shaker-Head Clamp Housing

The shaker-head clamp housing is the load-transfer body that grips the trunk and transmits high-frequency oscillatory force from the shaker head. It sits at the end of the boom on self-propelled and trailed nut harvesters, cycling millions of times per season under reversing loads. Buyers come to us after fatigue cracking at the jaw roots, elongated pad bolt holes, or bore wear that lets the head slip and scar bark. We cast the housing net-shape in alloy or stainless steel, then finish-machine the pivot bores, jaw faces and bolt pads.

Scope and options

Key features

  • Net-shape casting of the jaw and boss geometry removes welded assemblies that crack under reversing shake loads.
  • Pivot bores finish-bored to H7 with controlled surface finish to protect bushings and pins from fretting.
  • Clamp pad faces machined flat and parallel so rubber pad pressure stays even and bark damage is minimized.
  • Moreover, Optional quench and temper to 28–34 HRC for fatigue strength at the jaw root fillets.
  • Generous root radii and uniform wall transitions designed in partnership with your engineering team to cut stress risers.
  • Magnetic particle inspection and 100% visual inspection on load-bearing sections before release.

Applications

  • Self-propelled almond and pistachio harvesters
  • Trunk and canopy shakers for walnut and pecan orchards
  • Trailed and three-point-linkage shaker heads
  • Catch-frame mounted clamp assemblies
  • Orchard research and demonstration harvesters

Quality & compliance

Every clamp housing ships with EN 10204 3.1 material certification traceable to the heat number, plus a dimensional report covering all machined datums and bolt patterns. We supply PPAP Level 3 or a full First Article Inspection report on request, supported by control plans, process flow diagrams and capability studies on critical characteristics. All foundry and machining operations run under our IATF 16949 certified quality management system, with spectrometer verification on every melt, mechanical test coupons retained per batch, and non-destructive testing to your specified acceptance level.

FAQ

What shake frequency and load can the clamp housing be engineered for?

We design to your duty cycle. Most orchard shaker heads run between 12 and 28 Hz with clamp forces from 8 to 30 kN. Share your load spectrum and target fatigue life and we will size wall sections, fillet radii and heat treatment accordingly, then validate with coupon testing before tooling is finalized.

Can you match an existing housing we currently buy as a fabrication?

Yes. Send the drawing, a sample, or a 3D scan. We will assess whether a single investment casting can replace the weldment, usually removing several weld joints and the post-weld stress relief step. In most conversions we also cut part weight by 10 to 20 percent through better material distribution.

Which material do you recommend for corrosive orchard environments?

Moreover, for standard duty, quenched and tempered 42CrMo gives the best fatigue-to-cost ratio. Where fertilizer spray, irrigation water or humid coastal conditions drive corrosion, 316 stainless or duplex 2205 removes the painting step and extends service life substantially. Generally, we will quote both options for comparison.

Do you supply the rubber clamp pads as well?

We machine the pad mounting faces and drill the fixing pattern but do not mold rubber. However, we can coordinate with your pad supplier and ship housings with pads pre-assembled to your line, or deliver the casting ready for your own pad bonding process.

What is the minimum order quantity for a new clamp housing program?

Typical MOQ is 200 pieces per part number for production, though we accept lower pilot quantities during the sampling and validation phase. Additionally, tooling is quoted separately and is owned by you once paid. Also, repeat orders carry no tooling charge, and we store and maintain your tooling at no cost between seasons.
