Orthopaedic Bone Saw Blade Guide Block

The orthopaedic bone saw blade guide block is the hardened stainless body that captures and steers an oscillating or reciprocating saw blade against the cutting jig during knee, hip and shoulder arthroplasty. It sets blade depth, restricts lateral wander and protects surrounding soft tissue, so slot width, parallelism and edge condition directly control cut accuracy and bone thermal damage. The part combines thin blade slots, angled faces, irrigation windows and datum pads that would be extremely wasteful to mill from solid bar. We cast the near net shape in 17-4PH or AISI 420 under silica sol, then finish machine the slot, datum pads and mounting faces so every block repeats precisely across instrument sets.

Scope and options

Key features

  • Near net shape casting removes up to 70 percent of the bar stock removal required by a fully machined block, cutting unit cost on long instrument programmes.
  • Blade slot and opposing faces machined in one clamping to hold slot parallelism within 0.02 mm.
  • 17-4PH H900 gives 40 HRC plus wear resistance at the blade contact line; H1025 is offered where impact toughness and stress corrosion resistance matter more.
  • Irrigation windows and lightening pockets cast in, avoiding deep internal milling and the burr traps that follow.
  • Every casting is heat number traceable and penetrant inspected before machining release.
  • Tooling held free of charge for repeat programmes, so spare and replacement blocks ship without new tooling cost.

Applications

  • Total knee arthroplasty femoral and tibial cutting blocks
  • Hip resurfacing and femoral neck cut guides
  • Revision surgery blade capture blocks for multi-plane osteotomy
  • Trauma and small joint reconstruction saw guides
  • Veterinary orthopaedic instrument sets

Quality & compliance

Each production lot ships with EN 10204 3.1 certification traceable to the melt heat, a chemical and mechanical test report covering hardness and tensile values, and a first-article dimensional report generated from CMM data against your drawing. Process control follows IATF 16949 discipline: controlled foundry parameters, documented heat treatment charts, and a retained sample from every heat. Ningbo Ruican is not an ISO 13485 contract manufacturer; we are not certified to ISO 13485 and do not claim to be. What we do supply is project-level ISO 13485 documentation prepared against your own Quality Agreement, supported by material data for 17-4PH H900/H1025, AISI 420 and AISI 316L together with ISO 10993-5 cytotoxicity data available on request. Final device validation, regulatory submission and market release remain with you as the legal manufacturer.

FAQ

Can you hold slot width tolerance on a cast guide block?

Yes. We cast the slot undersize and finish machine it, holding slot width to plus or minus 0.02 mm and parallelism within 0.02 mm across the slot length. CT4 to CT5 per ISO 8062-3 is routine on slot and datum features after machining, and we will state achievable capability per drawing before tooling is cut.

Why 17-4PH H900 rather than AISI 420 for a saw blade guide?

H900 gives around 40 HRC with good wear resistance at the blade contact line and better corrosion resistance than 420 after repeated autoclave cycles. AISI 420 hardened and tempered reaches higher hardness and is preferred where the block doubles as a cutting edge stop. H1025 trades hardness for toughness where blocks see impact loads.

How many autoclave cycles will the cast and machined block survive?

Corrosion performance after autoclaving depends on surface condition more than on the alloy, so we passivate per ASTM A967 and can electropolish to Ra 0.4 um to remove free iron and embedded media. Moreover, we supply salt spray and autoclave cycle test evidence from an accredited third-party laboratory on request.

Can you reproduce an existing guide block from a sample part?

Yes. Send the sample to Ningbo and we will 3D scan it, generate a manufacturing drawing with the datum scheme agreed with your engineering team, and produce approval parts. Where the original failed prematurely we can move the material to H1025 or 316L to address cracking or corrosion.

What documentation ships with each order?

Every order includes EN 10204 3.1 material certification, chemical and mechanical test reports, hardness mapping, penetrant inspection records and a first-article dimensional report. Project-level ISO 13485 documentation packages are prepared to your Quality Agreement, and ISO 10993-5 data is available on request.

What are your minimum order quantity and lead times?

There is no fixed minimum; we run prototype blocks as well as repeat batches. Tooling takes four to five weeks, first articles follow after that, and repeat orders typically ship in three to four weeks. Generally, tooling is held free of charge for active programmes.
