Spinal Rod Reducer Tower Body

The spinal rod reducer tower body is the load-carrying column of a minimally invasive pedicle screw reduction tower. It threads onto the screw head extension, carries the rod seat and the reduction slider, and transmits the force that draws a rod down into the tulip head. Buyers struggle with towers that splay or gall at the thread root after repeated reduction cycles, and with multi-part assemblies that loosen at the joint. Ningbo Ruican casts the tower as a single body with an integral thread boss and machined slider track, then finish machines the thread and track after aging so the reduction stroke stays smooth under load.

Key features

  • Monolithic cast tower removes the pinned and welded joint between the column and the screw head coupling, the most common loosening point in MIS towers.
  • Thread is machined after H900 aging on a CNC lathe with a calibrated gauge check, eliminating the galling seen on as-cast threads under repeated reduction strokes.
  • Integral slider track is cast with the internal channel cored, then wire EDM finished so the reduction slider travels without binding at full rod load.
  • Radiused window corners and uniform wall sections prevent the crack initiation that follows sharp machined corners in thin tower walls.
  • H900 gives 38-42 HRC at the thread and rod seat; H1025 is offered where towers are levered during deformity correction cases.
  • Moreover, Laser marked screw diameter and level identification on the outer flat, applied after passivation for legibility after repeated sterilization.
  • Full first article package: CMM report to the customer drawing, thread gauge results, hardness survey and FARO arm scan to CAD.

Applications

  • Rod reduction towers for minimally invasive pedicle screw systems.
  • Percutaneous screw extension and rod introduction instrument sets.
  • Deformity correction and scoliosis reduction tower sets with extended reach.
  • Lateral and oblique lumbar interbody fusion retractor towers.
  • Cervical and thoracolumbar revision instrument trays.
  • Cadaveric and surgeon training sets built on production tower geometry.

Quality & compliance

Ningbo Ruican is not an ISO 13485 contract manufacturer. It supplies cast and CNC-machined components in 17-4PH (H900/H1025), AISI 420 and AISI 316L together with project-level documentation under the customer’s Quality Agreement, including material traceability and ISO 10993-5 biocompatibility test support. Heat lot records, EN 10204 3.1 material certificates, furnace charts and inspection data accompany every shipment, and any process or material change is routed through the customer’s change control procedure before implementation.

FAQ

Can you cast the internal slider channel instead of machining it from solid?

Yes. The slider channel is produced with a ceramic core during casting, then finished by wire EDM or milling to size. This cuts material removal time substantially and keeps grain flow continuous through the channel walls. Moreover, this improves fatigue behaviour at the thin section.

How do you prevent thread galling on reusable towers?

We machine threads after heat treatment with sharp tooling and controlled cutting parameters, verify pitch diameter with calibrated thread gauges, then passivate and optionally electropolish the surface. Where the customer specifies a coating, we can supply the part ready for nitriding or a dry film lubricant applied at their facility.

What tolerance can be held on the slider track?

The track is machined to CT4 equivalent accuracy, typically +/-0.05 mm on width and position to the tower axis, verified on the CMM. We recommend defining the slider interface datums on the drawing so that inspection and assembly use the same reference frame.

Do you machine the mating slider and rod seat as well?

We can supply the tower body only, or machine the full sub-assembly including slider, rod seat and threaded coupling from the same heat lot. Supplying the set reduces interface disputes because one supplier holds every datum in the reduction stack.

Which documentation ships with the first article?

The first article ships with a dimensional report against every ballooned feature, material certificate, heat treatment chart, hardness survey, surface finish measurement and photographs, formatted to the customer’s template. Production lots repeat this package at the sampling intensity agreed in the Quality Agreement.

Can you support both reusable and single-use tower programs?

We support both. Reusable programs normally specify 17-4PH H900 with electropolished finish and marking durability testing, while single-use programs often move to AISI 420 or 316L with a bead blasted finish and a leaner documentation set defined by the customer.
