Product introduction
Ningbo Ruican produces investment cast surgical retractor ratchet frame bodies for self-retaining retractor systems, using silica sol lost wax casting to hold fine ratchet tooth geometry and thin frame webs without heavy post-machining. Bodies are supplied in AISI 420 martensitic stainless steel or 17-4PH precipitation hardening stainless steel in the H900 condition, then CNC machined on pivot bores and blade slots to customer drawings. Every lot is passivated and supplied with material certification and inspection records under the customer’s Quality Agreement.

Key features
- Precision ratchet tooth profile cast net-shape, holding tooth pitch and flank geometry so the retractor locks repeatably under load without slip or tooth peening.
- Machined arm pivot bores produced on CNC machining centers with reaming and boring to maintain concentricity between the two arm pivots.
- Radiused blade mounting slots with controlled corner radii, preventing stress risers at the slot root where blades seat under retraction force.
- Passivated finish per ASTM A967, removing free iron and producing a uniform chromium oxide layer for corrosion resistance through repeated sterilization cycles.
- Burr-free edges and controlled surface roughness on all handling surfaces, with deburring and edge-breaking defined by drawing callout.
- Full traceability from melt to finished part, with heat lot identification maintained through casting, heat treatment, machining and packing.
Applications
- Self-retaining abdominal and general surgery retractors, where the ratchet frame holds blade separation during open procedures.
- Orthopedic and spinal retractors requiring high strength frames with minimal deflection under sustained retraction load.
- Thoracic and cardiovascular retractor frames machined to accept interchangeable blade sets.
- Plastic, reconstructive and hand surgery retractors where fine ratchet pitch and low-profile frames are required.
- Veterinary and dental retractor instruments produced to the same material and dimensional specification.
Materials and heat treatment
| Material | Standard | Condition | Application note |
|---|---|---|---|
| AISI 420 martensitic stainless steel | ASTM A743 / ASTM A276, UNS S42000 | Hardened and tempered, typically 40-50 HRC | Cost-effective choice for reusable retractor frames where high hardness and edge retention matter more than maximum corrosion resistance |
| 17-4PH precipitation hardening stainless steel | ASTM A564 / ASTM A747, UNS S17400 | H900 condition, approx. 38-42 HRC | Preferred where higher strength, better corrosion resistance and dimensional stability after heat treatment are required |
| 17-4PH | ASTM A564, UNS S17400 | H1025 or H1075 on request | Selected when greater toughness and stress corrosion resistance are specified by the customer drawing |
| AISI 316L austenitic stainless steel | ASTM A743 CF-3M, UNS S31603 | Solution annealed | Alternative for frames prioritizing corrosion resistance and non-magnetic behavior over hardness |
| Passivation treatment | ASTM A967 (citric or nitric) | As specified, typically Nitric 2 or Citric 4 | Applied after final machining and before packing; results recorded in the inspection report |
Quality and compliance
Ningbo Ruican operates an IATF 16949 certified quality management system covering casting, heat treatment and CNC machining, with incoming material control, in-process inspection and final dimensional verification recorded per work order.
Process selection is driven by geometry and tolerance: silica sol investment casting is used where tight tolerances (ISO 8062 CT4 to CT6), fine surface finish and thin walls are required, while water glass investment casting is offered for larger frames or less critical features where a lower piece price is the priority. Ningbo Ruican advises on the correct route at quotation stage based on your drawing callouts and annual volume.
Material certification is provided to EN 10204 3.1 with heat lot traceability, including chemical analysis and mechanical test results from accredited laboratories. Heat treatment records (hardening, tempering, solution treatment and ageing) are retained and supplied with each shipment.
First Article Inspection (FAI) reports with full dimensional layout, material certificates and process records are supplied for new part introductions. PPAP-style documentation packages, including control plans, process flow diagrams, process FMEA and capability studies, can be prepared under a customer Quality Agreement.
Note for medical device customers: Ningbo Ruican is not an ISO 13485 certified contract manufacturer. Ningbo Ruican supplies cast and machined components and documentation packages under the customer’s Quality Agreement, supporting your own device validation and regulatory submission. Device-level 510(k), CE or MDR conformity remains the responsibility of the device manufacturer.

FAQ
Which stainless grade should I choose for a retractor frame?
AISI 420 hardened and tempered to 40-50 HRC is the cost-effective reusable grade. 17-4 PH in H900 (38-42 HRC) is preferred where higher strength and better corrosion resistance are specified, with H1025/H1075 for greater toughness; 316L covers frames where corrosion resistance is the priority.
Do you hold the ratchet tooth pitch in the casting?
Yes. The tooth profile is cast net-shape so pitch and flank geometry stay consistent, then the ratchet faces are milled and the arm pivot bores reamed and bored on CNC machining centres to hold concentricity between the arms.
How is the frame finished for surgical use?
Passivated per ASTM A967 (nitric or citric) after final machining and before packing, with burr-free edges and controlled roughness: Ra 1.6 µm as cast, Ra 0.8 µm or better on machined and polished areas. Electropolishing is available on request.
What are the tolerances, MOQ and lead time?
Silica sol casting holds ISO 8062 CT4–CT6 and +/-0.02 to +/-0.05 mm on machined features. Prototype runs are accepted from 10 pieces with a production MOQ of 100. Tooling 20-30 days, samples 25-35 days, production 30-45 days after sample approval.
