Surgical Suction-Irrigation Handpiece Housing

The surgical suction-irrigation handpiece housing is the surgeon-held body that carries the twin flow channels, valve seats and tubing barbs used to clear the operative field and deliver irrigation fluid during minimally invasive procedures. Grip geometry, channel routing and balance all sit in one part, and the internal passages have no straight-line access for a cutting tool. Because the housing must survive repeated autoclaving and contact patient tissue indirectly, material cleanliness and surface condition drive performance as much as dimensional accuracy. We cast the housing as a single piece with the internal channels formed by ceramic cores, then machine the valve seats, barb threads and grip datums.

Scope and options

Key features

  • Single-piece cast body with cored twin channels removes the brazed or welded joints that leak and trap soil in fabricated housings.
  • Valve seat bores machined concentric with the flow axis so plunger and valve components seal consistently.
  • Electropolished fluid contact surfaces at Ra 0.4 um reduce bacterial adhesion and shorten validated cleaning cycles.
  • Moreover, Low-carbon 316L chemistry controls sensitisation and intergranular corrosion through repeated steam sterilisation.
  • Generally, Every cored section is radiographically examined; any indication at the channel wall is scrapped, not repaired.
  • Titanium-free and latex-free handling and packing available for sensitive device programmes.

Applications

  • Laparoscopic suction-irrigation probes and pistol-grip handpieces
  • Arthroscopic fluid management handpieces
  • Thoracoscopic and thoraco-abdominal irrigation instruments
  • Endoscopic sinus and ENT suction instruments
  • Veterinary minimally invasive surgical handpieces

Quality & compliance

Deliverables include EN 10204 3.1 certification with full chemical analysis and ferrite-free verification where specified, radiographic film or digital records for every cored section, penetrant inspection reports, passivation records and a first-article dimensional report from CMM data. Moreover, hydrostatic, leakage and flow test results can be included where you define the test method. In general, Ningbo Ruican does not hold ISO 13485 certification and is not an ISO 13485 contract manufacturer. Instead we work to your Quality Agreement and provide the corresponding project-level ISO 13485 documentation, together with 17-4PH H900/H1025, AISI 420 and AISI 316L material data and ISO 10993-5 biocompatibility data available on request, so your regulatory team can assemble the device technical file without overclaiming supplier certification.

FAQ

How thin can you cast the channel walls?

With silica sol tooling and supported ceramic cores we routinely hold 1.2 mm to 1.5 mm walls on 316L handpiece housings. Below 1.2 mm the risk of misrun and core shift rises sharply, and we will recommend a thicker wall or a revised channel route during the design review.

Can you guarantee the flow channels do not communicate?

Yes for cored designs when combined with our standard inspection sequence: radiography of every cored section, followed by hydrostatic or air-under-water leakage testing to a pressure you specify. Any part showing cross-channel leakage or wall indication is rejected.

Why CF8M rather than wrought 316L for this housing?

CF8M is the cast equivalent of 316L and allows the grip, channels and barb bosses to be produced as one piece rather than welded from tube and plate. Generally, mechanical properties are comparable after solution anneal, with slightly higher molybdenum retained in the specified chemistry range.

What surface finish do you achieve inside the cored channels?

As-cast cored channels run around Ra 6.3 um. We follow with abrasive flow or mechanical polishing of accessible runs and electropolishing of the complete fluid path, typically reaching Ra 0.8 um to Ra 1.6 um internally and Ra 0.4 um on machined and accessible flow surfaces.

Can you supply assembled or partially assembled handpieces?

Additionally, our scope is the cast and machined housing plus any specified sub-components we machine. Also, we do not assemble sterile devices or place them on the market. In general, we can deliver kitted sub-assemblies under your Quality Agreement where you perform final assembly and release.

Do you support low-volume validation builds?

Yes. We quote a validation run of ten to fifty pieces with full documentation, then hold the tooling for production release once your design verification is complete. Also, first-article Inspection Reports follow the AIAG format or your own template.
